E.G. Mitchell, Union Soldier

E.G. Mitchell (his first name was spelled both Eldom and Elden on his
army records) was one of three brothers who migrated from Georgia to
Winston County, Alabama, just prior to the Civil War. When the oldest
brother was conscripted into the Confederate service in 1863, all
three brothers joined the First Alabama Cavalry, U.S.A., then
headquartered at Camp Davies, near Corinth. Along with all others
belonging to Company L, they enrolled in the army on Sept. 25, 1863
and were mustered in on Oct. 21, 1863. At the time of their
enrollment, the three brothers were ages 16, 18, and 20. E.G. was the
18-year-old. His army records indicate he was 5 feet, 11 inches tall
with a light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. E.G. was promoted
to corporal on Dec. 9, 1863. He suddenly became ill and died in the
regimental hospital at Camp Davies on January 11, 1864. Cause of
death was listed as "inflammation of the lungs."
