THE PEPSI SKYWRITING TEAM
SUZANNE ASBURY-OLIVER
STEVE OLIVER
The sight is almost magical -- a tiny airplane writing
gigantic messages across the sky. This is skywriting. It began in
England in 1922 when a British war ace skywrote the world's first
aerial message. Captain Allen J. Cameron, an American pilot, brought
the art to the United States in the autumn of 1922 and wrote, "Hello
U.S.A.", over New York City.
Pepsi-Cola Company first used skywriting in the early '30's
when, "DRINK PEPSI-COLA" was written over New York City. Soon,
Pepsi-Cola had a fleet of 14 biplanes and pilots writing the ten mile
message in mile high letters. Television advertising grounded the
skywriters in 1953, but a quarter of a century later the plane and the
message were again in the sky to celebrate the company's 75th
anniversary. "Smilin' Jack" Strayer was the '70s skywriter. Suzanne
Asbury joined him as co-pilot in 1980 and moved into the pilot's seat
in 1981 when Strayer retired.
Today, Suzanne Asbury-Oliver tours the nation from coast to
coast skywriting a total of 1000 PEPSI's over 150 towns and cities.
