I visited with Mary Emma today and showed her the photographs I got
from Zelma McCord. She was unable to date the old portraits of Roscoe
but she thinks it would be soon after WWI. The other 2 family
portraits she can date from the photo of herself. She says she was
approximately 9 years old in the photograph which would make the photo
in 1927 or 1928. She is wearing a dress which was made for her by
Carline. She notes it was freshly made because the hem at the bottom
had not been sharply pressed. The mink around her neck was loaned to
her from Carline. I noted a photograph made at this same time was
used in the Commercial Appeal newstory in 1934 concerning the
London-Melbourne race. What had not been apparent from that photo until
I compared them was that the newspaper had cut out the outline of the
father and slid it over, covering up all of Mary Emma except the left
side of the top of her head. Unless you are looking for it, you would
never notice it. Mary Emma said she was never aware they did that.
Looking at the photo of the whole family, Mary Emma recalled memories
of each of her family members. Cass worked at the time of the photo
for Galtney Motor Co., the Ford dealer at that time around 1927 or
1928. She could not remember what car dealership Roscoe had- STAR or
GREY. Mrs. Blanch Kemp's (who lives on Linden St.) husband Dewey,
worked for Roscoe and may have pictures and more information. Roscoe
and Carline moved to Richmond, Virginia. Around 1929 when Mary
Emma was 11, Roscoe moved from Richmond to Hollywood. She remembers
Robert driving her mother, herself and Cass to Richmond. Cass was
going to drive Carline's car back to Corinth since Carline did not want
to drive cross country. She remembers Cass driving Carline's car which
was a GREY and her mother and she going and getting separated from Cass
in Virginia. Roscoe and Carline flew from Richmond, VA to Hollywood.
Her brother Robert was her best friend in life as well as her
brother. He left Corinth working for Mr. McNair, the Western Union
maintenance group, who hired him to paint signs for the company. They
moved across the southeast and worked much of the time in the Carolinas
and Virginia. While working for Western Union, the company furnished
accommodations on a work train. After leaving Western Union, he worked
for Caldwell & Co. in Nashville for several years. He became an aviator
while living in that area. He managed hotels in Birmingham, Alabama and
El Paso, Texas. He and brother, Abe, then managed a privately owned
hotel in Cushing, Oklahoma- the Hotel Ambassador. They decided to go
into other lines of employment and Abe went with the Internal Revenue
Service in Oklahoma City and Robert became office manager for the company
Roscoe formed in Indianapolis.
She recalls her father's affectionate nickname for Carline, Roscoe's
first wife, was "Jaybird".
