THE DAILY CORINTHIAN - March 31, 1961
AIRPORT DEDICATION AND AIR
SHOW HERE SUNDAY AFTERNOON
--------------------------
Saturday and Sunday will be a big weekend for Corinth and Alcorn
County. Southern Airways will begin service here Saturday and the
Corinth-Alcorn County Airport will be dedicated Sunday.
Thousands are expected to attend the gigantic dedication and "air
fair" which will begin at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Mississippi's Governor Ross Barnett will dedicate the airport. The
air show will follow immediately.
Included in the afternoon's show will be Memphis Air Force Base
parachute jumps, Memphis Skydivers, helicopter demonstration, display and
demonstration of private and business aircraft, and a U.S. Air Force
Reserve C-123 troop carrier on display.
One of the highlights of the dedication will be the presence of
Roscoe Turner, well-known pioneer of aviation and speed flying. Turner,
a native of Corinth, has accepted an invitation to participate in the
dedication ceremonies. Following are a few of the records Turner can
boast:
The only three-time winner of the famous Thompson Trophy Race, he
and Jimmie Doolittle are the only pilots who have won both the Thompson
and Bendix Trophies, and in 1934, he was sponsor and commander of the
only American team to finish in the greatest of all air races- The
McRoberts International Air Race from London to Melbourne, Australia. He
took second place in the speed division.
Among the V.I.P.'s that will be in attendance from Southern Airways
Sunday will be Archie D. Yawn, director of advertising and sales
development, and Misses Kathleen Hatchett and Maurine Perkins,
stewardesses based in Atlanta, Ga.
Residents of Corinth and Alcorn County are urged to make
reservations to Tupelo at least on Southern's first flight south Saturday
morning. So far, the number of reservations booked for the flight is
disapppointing.
If the airport is to grow and to get more flights, the people of
Corinth and Alcorn County must support it.
