An estimated 15,000 persons yesterday afternoon witnessed dedication
ceremonies and air show at the new Roscoe Turner Airport. Commercial
service by Southern Airways was inaugurated at the airport Saturday
morning.
Dedicatory remarks were made by Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett.
Other dignitaries taking part in the impressive ceremony were Rep. Tom
Abernethy [Democratic representative to Congress representing Corinth
from Okolona, MS] and Roscoe Turner, famous Corinthian who holds numerous
aeronautical records and honors.
Turner expressed his "sincere appreciation to the people of Alcorn
County for naming the airport after me." He congratulated Corinth and
Alcorn County on recent progress and stated the new facility would be a
valuable asset.
Master of ceremonies for the program was attorney H.M.Ray, who
served as chairman of the Corinth- Alcorn County Airport Commisssion last
year. Numerous officials of Southern Airways were on hand for the event.
Archie Yawn, public relations official for Southern, stated "this
is the biggest turnout Southern has seen at any of its many airports."
Following the dedication, spectators were treated to a
professional- type "air fair" highlighted by skydivers, acrobatic flying,
helicopter demonstration, etc.
Hundreds of automobiles clogged all approaches to the airport and
school buses carried hundreds of spectators from their cars to the
airport.
Private planes from cities throughout surrounding states filled the
airport runways and parking area to capacity.
