LETTER FROM TURNER
EXPRESSES GRATITUDE,
HOPE FOR AIR PROGRESS
As the concluding message to homefolks during his Homecoming Day
trip, Colonel Roscoe Turner addressed the following letter to The Daily
Corinthian before leaving the city Sunday.
To my good friends in Corinth and Alcorn County:
In this world of so much infidelity and make believe I have asked
the Editor of this good paper to bring this message of sincerity from the
bottom of my heart. I ask you to receive it in the spirit of
unselfishness in which I have tried to live my life.
You have bestowed' a great honor on me by naming your airport
after me, and, also, by giving me such a tremendous ovation. Greetings
have been extended to me from the four corners of the Earth but none have
been so dear or so filled my heart with joy, as the homecoming planned
for me by you dear people.
You have given me a new incentive to continue on and I hope that
my future will fulfill your expectations of me.
The airport is the last and final step in your transportation
set-up. No airlines would ever consider Corinth without a suitable
landing field. With Corinth's airport completed and in satisfactory
condition it is possible that a line will go out of its way to pick up
the business here. I know it must be difficult for you to realize what
an airline service would mean in bringing you within a few hours reach of
any point in the United States. Principally, such a service would speed
up your business activities by carrying your mail and bringing supplies
to your door by Air Express. You should certainly be proud of your board
of supervisors, your board of Aldermen and the different WPA and
Department of Commerce officials, who had enough foresight to help put in
this airport.
Needless to say, your secretary of the Chamber of Commerce,
A.J.McEachern, deserves a great deal of credit for his unceasing effort.
It is my belief that Corinth is fortunate to have a man of his type --
one who never seems to tire. From coast to coast, I have found none
better.
I know there has been a great deal of opposition to this project,
but now that it is a fact I wish that one and all would get behind it, as
you would any civic project, for through aviation lies advancement for
your community.
To all of you who have in any way participated in this
celebration, I extend my gratitude and profound thanks.
ROSCOE TURNER
