I received a call from Mr. Herbert Brady today who was calling to
thank me for the material I had sent him pertaining to Roscoe Turner Day
in 1936. Mr. Brady is 77 and was born in 1916. Mr. Brady was an Air
Force instructor at Camden, SC during WWII.
Mr. Brady learned to fly around 1940-1941 from a Mr. Ray Smith
who was from Aberdeen who came to Corinth and taught 5 or 6 people
to fly. He remembers Cooper Adams, Dick Penny, Willy Elmer Isom,
Josephine DePoyster [* see below], and James Galyean, Jr. taking lessons
at the same time as he did. [Jack Tacker recalls riding to Tupelo with
James Galyean in his 1939 Buick and James Galyean tried to rent an
airplane from Mr. C.D.Lemons. There were no planes for rent in Corinth.
Mr. Lemons would not rent him a plane because he didn't think he had
enough experience and Jack recalls how disappointed they were driving
back to Corinth. Per conversation 4/25/1993]
Mr. Brady remembers a man by the name of Quick owning a Jenny
after WWI and "passenger hopping" around Corinth before Roscoe Turner.
He remembers another pilot named Smith who flew into Corinth and crashed
while taking passengers for rides. He remembers the plane was taking off
from Southwest of Surratt's pond and crashed, killing a passenger by the
name of Henderson. The pilot was extracted from the plane and carried to
Joe Gray's front porch until a Doctor could arrive. The pilot later
married Joe Gray's daughter. His father had earlier purchased a ticket
for a flight with this same pilot, but sold it to someone else before the
fatal flight.
Mr. Brady remembered witnessing Roscoe's parachute jump over
Corinth. He said he and his friends were gathered on a hill in West
Corinth near the old Stanley Field to watch. They thought he would jump
out over West Corinth. Instead, he jumped right over Corinth, coming
down he thinks near the Gamble house on Taylor and Linden.

Mr. Brady remembers hearing about Roscoe driving up the
courthouse steps. He would think that would have been around 1924 or
1925. He thought the automobile would have been a Star or Moon or Grey.
He remembers Lee Rubel driving the only Moon automobile in Corinth.
When Roscoe came into town, he would always fly low over West Corinth,
coming in over their house at an altitude lower than Turner Hill. He can
remember Roscoe's coming in and seeing the shadow of the plane on the East
side of Turner hill. He would land in the pasture on the East side of
Turner hill. It was always a thrill to see him land, and always drew a
crowd.
Mr. Brady remembers Jan Keaton's father, the cartoonist, being an
aviation instructor in Jackson, Tennessee.
