TURNER RARE AMONG AIRMEN
Another veteran in the building of milestones along the airways
who ranked in the era of Lindbergh has passed out, but his records of
accomplishment will remain in aviation history.
Colonel Roscoe Turner, a native of Corinth, and pioneer in air
racing and holder of many speed records since the 1930's, has a most
permanent and ranking place in Aviation.
He not only earned an early reputation as a racer, but was a
movie stunt pilot and air show performer. He served in World War I and
later organized an air circus which featured all the breath-taking aerial
stunts of that era.
Col. Turner was one of an airmen breed long since faded from the
aviation scene. He was striking in his air attire, goggles,
wind-streamed silk scarf and leather jacket, but these all contributed to
the good of aviation.
His feats and his speed triumps proved many mechanical
improvements for airplanes and aviation and probably saved many lives of
airmen to follow.
Col. Turner was a distinct credit to aviation and his record of
accomplishment and reputation will honor the industry always.
