My reflections of Roscoe Turner-
When I was in Junior High School- where the Post Office is
located presently. It seems that when Roscoe would fly into Corinth the
news of his arrival spread like measels. After school we would get
someone to drive us to the airport so we could see him and his pet lion
that he flew with in his monoplane. At this time he was sponsored by the
Gilmore Oil Company. He always had arranged for someone to have a cage
for his lion to be locked up in so we kids could look at him/her. His
plane was the monoplane type with the wings on top of the fuselage. The
plane was painted in a bright yellow trimmed in bright red. After he got
his pet put in the cage he would come back by his plane talking to us
kids & answering questions. I can't recall back in those days if Mr.
McCord took any pictures at the airport. The airport at that time was on
the old road going to Shiloh. I do remember going onto the airfield
(probably someones pasture.) I do recall when going to the field you
went straight onto it. There was a sharpe turn to the right that went to
Shiloh Park. It was a dangerous turn if you were going too fast.
I can't recall if Roscoe was in the U.S.Army Air Corps during those days
but he always wore some type of uniform with all the trimmings. I
remember his waxed handled bar mustache that he played with. Roscoe had
a brother, Cass, who lived in West Corinth that sold cars for Galtney
Ford Motor Company which now would be the second building North of the
courthouse. We knew within a few days Roscoe would come to school and
talk to us about his travels & experiences. I believe he would enter
races which were sponsored by Shell Oil Co. [National Air Races/ Shell
Speed Dash] We all looked forward to his visits & his talks in chapel.
