                             COL. ROSCOE TURNER

            Col. Roscoe Turner, 74, speed flier of the '30s, attained
  national prominence when he captured the annual Thompson trophy race
  three times and also won the cross-country Bendix race, died June 23 in
  Indianapolis after a long illness.
          A barnstorming pilot, Howard Hughes called him in to perform for
  his "Hell's Angel's," and after that film Turner did both technical
  advisor work and stunted for several other air films.  For years, he flew
  the Gilmore Oil Co. plane in a public relations stint, and made frequent
  headlines for his daring.
          Wife and brother, survive.
