The collection is arranged chronologically by year. Negatives have been removed to the negative storage vault. The National Air Races was an annual event beginning in Los Angeles in 1928 where civilian aviators with custom built aircraft could compete in closed course pylon racing. In 1929, The National Air Races were held in Cleveland. Except for 1930 when they were held in Chicago, and 1933 and 1936 when they were held again in Loa Angeles, the races were always held in Cleveland. Thompson Products Inc., of Cleveland, sponsored the main event, the Thompson Trophy Race. The races were not held during World War II (1940-1945), but were resumed in 1946, when war surplus aircraft and military jets competed. In 1949, a fatal crash of one of the racing aircraft, involving civilian deaths, ended the National Air Races in Cleveland. The National Air Races Photographs is an excellent collection of images of the personalities, pilots, and aircraft that made the National Air Races the premier aviation event in the world. The collection contains photographs of National Air Race promoters such as Clifford Henderson and Benjamin Franklin; pilots such as ROSCOE TURNER, James Doolittle, James Weddell, Jackie Cochran, and Cook Cleland; and aircraft including the Gee-Bee racers, Weddell-Williams, Laird-Turner, and the World War II fighters that participated in the post-war races.
